Once you've confronted the reality that we are living in a climate and ecological emergency, it's hard to stop thinking about. I certainly don't.
Fortunately, people need to be thinking about what definitionally is the greatest crisis humanity has ever faced. So all the rants, blogs, debates, activism and reading I've done over the last few years hasn't been a waste of time - in fact, there's a compelling argument to be made that anything other than acting on the climate crisis is a waste of time. Priorities change when civilisation collapses!
The more I think about the climate crisis, the more I read about it, the trickier it becomes. I've gone through phases of oblivion to its true extent, a phase where my main attempt to avert total ecological catastrophe was to give a few talks about plastics to primary schools on Zoom, a doomerist phase where I felt like the future was a total write-off and I didn't need to bother keeping myself alive and healthy to see it, a therapy and activism phase where I blocked oil refineries with a now globally famous activist campaign, getting mental health support where I could, a fundamentalist preacher phase where I tried to convert anyone and everyone to glue themselves to a road, a disillusioned phase where I saw problems with every activist group (especially the one I was part of), a healing phase where I left activism behind and hibernated from politics, and a curiosity phase, where I tried to grapple with everything I'd learned across that time, to make sense of it all. That last one is where you currently find me. Reeling from the rollercoaster of last year, trying to work out what to think, what to do next.
The following blogs were written during various different phases of my journey. Shifts in my mentality should be pretty clear in the tone of each blog.
Regardless of what phase you find me in, however, one message is always consistent: something must be done. However stuck I might be, however difficult I might find this, there is no escaping the moral responsibility to try everything we can to stop the collapse of Earth's beautiful ecosystems, to prevent the mass suffering that would follow. I hope these blogs help you on your own journey to confront this responsibility.
